Avular Starling localization system
The Avular Starling system is developed completely in-house. From its concept to design, from assembly to testing. Its biggest advantage is the unmatched high accuracy of its measurements. When compared to ground truth, it’s shown that Starling is accurate up to 1 to 1,5 centimeters.
How it works
The beacons are placed within line of sight of the mobile robot. The camera on the robot ‘sees’ the beacons, using infra-red light. Everything is calculated locally on the robot and thanks to the smart design of the beacons, you can measure the orientation of the robot with up to one-degree accuracy.
Because the beacons use infra-red light, the robot(s) must always be in line of sight of at least 4 beacons, or at least 5 for an optimal result. This means the Starling is perfect for large halls, warehouses and distribution centers. Starling can truly excel indoors with its high accuracy – outdoors however, the sun disrupts its signals which leads to losing signals and lower accuracy. Its standard range is up to 30 to 35 meters.
Since every navigation system is developed for specific purposes, customers might want to combine some systems to gain all advantages and skip their limitations. That is possible with all Avular navigation systems, but also with third-party products. For example, combine our Stellar, Starling and Spectrum to navigate a mobile robot both indoors and outdoors.
Not only are the measurements of Avular Starling highly accurate, they are incredibly fast too. Starling can measure up to 80 hertz, which allows a mobile robot to move extremely fast without losing any data – around 80 km/h. Even turning speeds are up to a round per second. With Avular Starling, mobile robots aren’t limited in speed.
