Together with Hadek Protective Systems, we have created a new special purpose drone, designed to fly autonomously to inspect industrial chimneys faster and better.
Hadek is the expert on power plant chimneys. They came to Avular to help them make chimney inspections easier, faster and safer. Smart move, because we have just the right tools to help them: our Vertex 94 drone platform and a team of highly-skilled engineers.
So, we took the Vertex 94 platform as a basis and made adjustments specifically to support Hadek’s requirements for chimney inspections. As a result, the Vertex 94 platform is now equipped with additional LiDARs and a stereovision camara allowing for accurate chimney localization. On top there is a sophisticated camera module for hi-res chimney inspection.
The LiDAR sensors allow for measuring the drone’s position relative to the walls of the chimney (x and y) whilst the stereo vision camera keeps track of the vertical movement (z). Following the implementation of the additional sensors, we’ve adjusted the control software (flight controller) to work with the sensor measurements.
After the first successful integration, we’ve upgraded the drone using the latest platform version which now includes a foldable landing gear (to allow for easy transportation) and an advanced remote control that supports streaming video. The drone now also comes with our very own software Cerebra that enables easy drone configuration, software updates and even a real-time view on the sensor data.

Compared to a Vertex, this drone is much stronger, bigger and heavier-equipped. We have added a camera module and localization based on Lidar, barometer and IMU. There’s wireless communication between the camera module and a ground station, so it’s possible to establish a live-stream. It even has a simple Graphical User Interface, so it’s a pleasure to work with the drone.
