ADACORSA

Bringing driverless car technology to drone applications

Drones have the potential to completely change our lives. They can automate a broad range of tasks, like goods delivery, crowd management and surveillance. However, many of the envisioned drone applications require the drone to operate beyond the visible line of sight (BVLOS) of the drone operator. These BVLOS operations require a high level of autonomy and safety. Until today, only the driverless car industry has shown this level of autonomy in their vehicles. Therefore, adapting components from the driverless car industry to exploit them in drones could give a boost to the development of BVLOS solutions for drones.

The ADACORSA project focusses on delivering technical components for drone BVLOS operations at affordable prices, by adjusting components from the automotive industry. Furthermore, ADACORSA aims to increase the public acceptance of drones.

In this large consortium, Avular acts as an integrator and drone provider. Electrical components for environment perception, such as radar and camera, will be developed by other partners in the consortium. Avular will use sensor fusion techniques to integrate these components into a safe environment perception solution for drones in BVLOS operations. Avular’s drone, Vertex, will show the robustness of this environment perception solution in a BVLOS forestry use case.

This project has received funding from the ECSEL Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 876019. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Romania, France, Sweden, Cyprus, Greece, Lithuania, Portugal, Italy, Finland, Turkey
